Occasionally the pulp (nerve) of a tooth can become infected and/or inflamed. Deep cavities, trauma, broken tooth or repeated dental procedures can result in this inflammation/infection necessitating the removal of the pulp. Following root canal treatment, a crown is often placed over the tooth for protection.
